On behalf of everyone at RTRWorldwide, we are deeply saddened to hear of the death of the singer Eduard Khil. Mr Khil died on June 4th 2,012 from a stroke in a St Petersburg Hospital, he was 77 years old.
RTR Worldwide would like to send our deepest condolences to all of Mr Khil's family, friends and the millions of fans around the world; who enjoyed his music. He leaves a wonderful legacy that will continue to be enjoyed for many years to come and RTRWorldwide will be showing more clips of Mr Khil on our websites to celebrate his musical achievements, over the coming weeks.
Eduard Khil was born on 4 September 1,934 in Smolensk. In 1,955, he began his musical training at the Leningrad Conservatory performing various lead operatic roles, including Figaro in The Marriage of Figaro. Following graduation in 1,960, he fell in love with pop music and went on to achieve great success as one of Russians most successful pop singers, touring many countries during his career.
Amongst his many achievements he won notable prizes including the "All Russian Competition for Performers" in 1,962 and performed at the "Festival of Soviet Songs" in 1,965. Khil also won the Meritorious Artist of the RSFSR in 1,968 and The Order of the Red Banner of Labour in 1,971. Finally in 1,974 he was awarded Russia's most prestigious artist award, the People's Artist of Russia, and this lead to public calling him the 'Symbol of Leningrad'.
Khil continued to be involved in music throughout his life and in 2,009 was awarded The Order of Merit for the Fatherland, 4th Class in 2,009 by Russia. In 2,010 at the age of 75 years, he performed at the St. Petersburg's Victory Day Parade to great acclaim. Eduard Khril will be missed, with greatest sympathy.
